I've always been in love with fire escapes — since the first step I took in New York City, and also when I was a kid in northern France watching NYC movies, they've meant so much to me. I also love to photo- graph subjects that nobody gives attention – 8 million people work, walk, live in the City, day after day, and pass by these fire escapes without seeing them! I'm happy to bring them up alive through my art.
I love the different styles, colors, structures, and architecture of the buildings behind them. Each one is different.
I walked miles and miles (at least 300 miles) to photograph these in the city, from the Financial District to Soho to Chelsea to Midtown and Uptown and the five boroughs to find the right ones. I love the feeling of simply watching them — that's how I decided to put them side by side, finding the best patterns and putting them all together in harmony.
